Safety first: Pull over as far left as possible on the hard shoulder or emergency refuge area. Switch on hazard lights, exit the vehicle via the left-hand door and stand behind the barrier.

Can you change a tyre on the hard shoulder?
Our fitters attend vehicles on the hard shoulder and in emergency areas where it is safe to work. In some cases the vehicle may need to be moved to a safer place first.
Do you attend lorries on the motorway?
Yes. We attend HGVs, trailers and coaches as well as cars and vans.
Should I wait in my car on the motorway?
If it is safe to get out, leave by the left-hand door and wait behind the barrier. If you cannot get out safely, stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt on and hazard lights on, and call 999.
